Why is thorax MRI in such high demand?

Every day, various patients are referred for a thorax MRI, due to its high diagnostic importance and its ability to help the doctor diagnose or rule out a wide range of diseases, including serious diseases such as various thoracic cancers, heart and vascular diseases and more. It is a non-invasive examination that does not use ionizing radiation, such as X-ray, so it is suitable both as a follow-up examination after treatment and as an examination for pregnant women. What are the reasons for a referral for thorax MRI?
Since the examination provides an excellent picture of the various tissue structures in the thoracic area, the line of diagnosis that the doctor will want to confirm or rule out using the examination is very long.
If any previous examination revealed a tumor in the thorax or a suspicion of a tumor, the examination will determine whether such a tumor is present and whether it is a benign or malignant tumor.
If there is a suspicion of pathological processes in the thoracic area: the bones, ribs, vertebrae, etc., the examination will allow to identify and characterize the process.
A variety of heart and vascular diseases require a thorax MRI, during which the condition of blood vessels and various tissues in the heart and lungs can be diagnosed, thus determining the severity of the disease or, conversely, the degree of improvement after medical treatment.
If a pregnant woman is asked to undergo imaging and scan of the thorax, she will be referred for an MRI to prevent damage of radiation to the fetus as may occur in other examination such as CT.
Monitoring of various operations in blood vessels requires an MRI examination to determine the success of the process and decide on further treatment.
Performance of the examination
The examination is a magnetic resonance imaging examination, meaning, a scanning of organs in the body using magnetic resonance and radio waves, which are safe for the human body, and do no cause any damage. The examination is performed using contrast agent called gadolinium which injected into a vein, which does not cause any side effects. The only significant disadvantage of the examination is the need to lie motionless for about half an hour on the test table moving inside an MRI device. According to the technician’s instructions, the patient will occasionally be asked to hold their breath for about 20 seconds.
Indications against performance of the examination
Since this is a magnetic resonance examination, it cannot be performed in the case of a cochlear implant in the ear or clips to tighten the aneurysm in the brain. The presence of metal shrapnel in the body or a pacemaker require consultation with a specialist, and in some cases the examination can be performed. Claustrophobia may make it difficult for patients to pass the examination, but the matter can be overcome using tranquilizers, after consultation with a doctor prior to the examination.
Where can the examination be performed?
The examination is performed at several institutions across the country, both with referral by a health fund (through Form 17) and privately (with private insurance participation). The importance of the examination for diagnosis and continued treatment requires it be performed within a few days of the referral.
