Breast MRI is of great diagnostic importance, as this imaging examination provdes a complete picture of all the processes in the breast, nipple, thorax and armpit, without the need for X-ray radiation. It is a very sensitive examination that can demonstrate breast cancer even in the early stages of the disease. In some cases, an MRM (magnetic resonance mammography) also eliminates the need for biopsy and enables the doctor to determine the nature of findings discovered in other examinations. However, when there is reasonable suspicion of malignant tumor after an MRM examination, the woman will also be referred for a biopsy for final confirmation of the nature of the finding.

Performance of the examination
MRM has some uniqueness, it can only be performed on day 7-14 of the menstrual cycle. Given the narrow time window for the examination and its great importance, the demand for it is particularly high.
In all other aspects, the examination is the same as the rest of the MRI examinations. The patient should fast for two hours prior the examination, remove all metal objects and bring all previous examinations and relevant blood tests to it. If there are metal objects that cannot be removed or were inserted into the body in previous surgeries, the patient must receive detailed instructions from a doctor.
During the examination, the patient should lie motionless for about half an hour on the examination table moving inside an MRI device. If the patient suffers from claustrophobia, she may consult the doctor in regards to what can be done to perform the examination safely.
For the purpose of the examination, the patient lies on her stomach with her breasts placed inside a special device. Prior to the examination, in order to improve imaging results, a contrast agent called gadolinium is injected into the vein. The contrast agent has no side effects.
