The colonoscopy procedure
A colonoscopy is a test that enables a physician to closely examine the inner lining of the colon (large intestine and rectum) for abnormalities or changes. Using a long, flexible tube that has a tiny camera attached to the end, called a colonoscope, air is introduced to maximize visibility. The patient is sedated for the procedure. A flexible sigmoidoscopy differs from a colonoscopy examining only the rectum and lower part of the colon.
Who performs the colonoscopy?
Most often a gastroenterologist performs this procedure, as well as other trained professionals. Days prior to the procedure, your specialist will instruct fully how to prepare for the colonoscopy. It is also important to list any prescriptions and over-the-counter medication you are taking to your physician.
Who needs a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is recommended in several circumstances, which can include:
- Further investigation for signs and symptoms that include rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and more
- Colon cancer screening should be performed from 50 years of age (and when appropriate)

After a colonoscopy
Apart from screening for specific changes of the lining, it is also possible during the procedure to remove tissue (biopsy) from abnormal tissue or polyps. Depending on circumstances, the tissue is then sent to pathology labs to detect the presence of disease, and/or microbiology labs to determine if an infection is present. Following the procedure, the patient receives their results including those of biopsies (if any) within a few days, further tests may be required; the patient is guided throughout the procedure and treatment.
